Jim Shymansky
STEM-SMART Designer
Jim Shymansky recently retired as professor of science education after a decades-long career at the University of Iowa and the University of Missouri-Saint Louis where he worked with teachers on ways to use hands-on science inquiry to learn not only science, but also how to read, write and communicate! STEM-Smart is the culmination of a career that draws on his experiences as a science teacher, an author science textbooks and special learning materials, a provider of professional development, and research on teaching and learning science.
John Dunkhase
Author
Dunkhase worked for 15 years as an exploration geologist and geochemist in Western United States. After that he was a professor of science education at the University of Iowa where he: coordinated the secondary and elementary science teacher education programs; directed the outreach science education graduate program for practicing teachers; was principal investigator or co- principal investigator on 5 major professional development grant projects for science teachers; and taught a field geology course in Colorado for teachers for 25 years.
Kevin Koepnick
Author
Kevin has taught Biology at Iowa City High School for more than 30 years. His professional interests focus on the integration of inquiry-based, student-centered approaches to student learning. He is active in the development of standardized testing, and has research experience in molecular biology as well as evolutionary biology. A former Presidential Award for Excellence in Math and Science Teaching finalist, he has received the NABT Outstanding Teacher Award and a Tandy Technology Prize.
John Craven
Author
John Craven is an associate professor of science education at Fordham University where he works with teachers in the metropolitan region of New York City helping them develop engaging curriculum for students in high needs schools. He has particular expertise in geological science, but also has vast experience across many age groups in environmental education, technology, and STEM education.
Matt Harding
Author
Matt has taught Introductory Algebra-based Physics, Advanced Placement Physics and ELL General Science in the Iowa City Community School District for the past 20 years. He has been an active leader in developing the district’s K-12 online science program that emphasizes data collection, critical thinking and argumentation.
Deb Dunkhase
Author
Deb Dunkhase is Executive Director Emeritus for The Iowa Children’s Museum, a successful nonprofit organization that serves over 170,000 children and adults annually. As museum director Deb’s work involved direct teaching with elementary level students and leadership roles working closely with parent and teacher groups to bridge the gap between formal and informal education. Deb currently serves on the Governor’s STEM Advisory Council and chairs the Council’s Active Learning Community Partners
Committee.
